Summary

Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere-some estimates report as high as 529/100,000 births. The infant mortality rate stands at 44/1000 births, double that of any other Caribbean nation. Infections and Neonatal asphyxia account for a large portion of these deaths and are preventable! Global Health Charities' Clean Birth Kits help prevent infection during delivery. GHC also provides essential training programs in the areas of neonatal resuscitation.

Challenge

Everyday 786 mothers and 11,000 babies die due to childbirth complications and infections. 90% of these are preventable. Neonatal asphyxia accounts for an estimated 1 million infant deaths globally. As gang violence and gang occupation of areas spreads across Haiti, pregnant women have limited or no access to medical facilities or care.

Solution

GHC's CBKs address the World Health Organizations six (6) cleans for childbirth: clean hands, clean perineum, clean birthing surface, clean umbilical cord cutting implement, clean cord tying and clean cord care. Studies show that Helping Babies Breathe training can reduce early neonatal mortality by up to 50% and fresh stillbirths by up to 24%

Long-Term Impact

Studies show that CBKs have a significant impact in reducing infections during childbirth for both mother and baby. Anecdotal evidence shows a high demand for the CBKs by expectant mothers. "The Sisters in Nigeria had great success in reducing the mortality/morbidity of births using the clean birth kits and leveraging their use to provide pre-natal supplements and do training of the local midwives & outreach workers." - Sr Mary Louise Stubbs, DC IPS Director
