Updates from Habibi.Works

By Carlotta Borroni | Fundraising Coordinator

Habibi.Works turned 8 this year!

It’s wild to think about how much the project has evolved since its foundation in August 2016 —not in core values, but certainly in appearance and activities. On 5 October, we celebrated with a huge lunch, a pancake station, kids activities and over 100 participants, marking not only the anniversary but also the end of a hot summer and a busy September. We can’t thank you enough for being part of this journey!

The months immediately following the summer have seen an increase in people visiting the space for the first time. Our team members have been taking the time to show everyone around and explain the wide variety of working areas that we host. The kitchen has been serving an average of 100 people every night, and the gym has experienced an exponential increase in attendance. Moreover, with the approach of colder weather, the team organized a blanket distribution, handing out over 200 blankets.

This period has also been a time to cultivate and nurture different partnerships:

Yoga and Sports with Refugees: Our sports space has been thriving since its creation in 2021. We recently decided to re-define responsibilities between Yoga and Sports and our organisation to make the daily coordination easier. Both partners continue to be committed to maintaining the space and activities that participants love!

MedEqual: Since July, the MedEqual Team has been offering medical consultations every Saturday at the Habibi.Works Dome. Given the lack of access to proper healthcare in the camp, their work is in high demand.

Mothers and Midwives: Back at Habibi.Works for another round of projects, providing consultations on reproductive health, awareness sessions, and distributing hygiene products like pads.

Second Tree: The scout program of Second Tree has been running on our premises for several of its 6 week cycles this summer, offering activities for children and teens.

Hirundo: Our collaboration with stop-motion filmmaker Fausta continues! She returned this summer for more creative projects, and we even held a screening of previous works at a local restaurant.

Mending Project by Penny: Penny, a skilled Greek seamstress joined us in September, leading a 4-week mending project. This initiative fostered collaboration and skill-sharing in a very hands-on way.

Wind Empowerment: In collaboration with several Greek partners, we are these days building a small wind turbine at Habibi.Works—an exciting sustainable energy project facilitated by our Greek Outreach Officer Stella.

The Habibi.Works Free Shop

Since it's opening 937 individuals have registered, highlighting the significant demand for hygiene products and confirming what the Habibi.Works team had already observed: the drastic reductions in people’s monthly allowances in Greece had created a constant need for additional support.
The Free Shop is open to everyone, offering a selection of items, with each adult eligible to choose three products per month.

Updates from Katsikas Camp

We wish there were positive things to say about the developments around the refugee camp of Katsikas or the context of migration in Greece and Europe generally. Unfortunately, things have not been improving.

There’s been a clear increase in arrivals at the camp in recent weeks. Official numbers haven’t been shared with us in the recent years anymore. According to our estimations and accounts of people living in the camp, the facility currently accommodates more than 1000 people. The majority of the men, women and children who have been arriving of late were transferred to Katsikas from the Greek islands.

Unfortunately, poor health and hygiene conditions persist due to unsuitable living containers, and complaints about the food (which is provided by so called “catering companies”) are ongoing. Within monthly community meetings held at Habibi.Works, as well as during individual conversations, people have opportunities to share accounts on the challenging situation with members of our team. The access to spaces where people can find community, create solutions themselves and access services such as health care and legal advice continues to be as important as ever.

As always thank you for your support, we are grateful and looking forward to keeping you updated on our progress!
