Protesters have flooded Guatemala City and are causing a threat to the children living in our care at our Sisters of Mary schools in Guatemala City. After 8 consecutive days of protests, and threats, our two secondary schools for girls and boys and our day care centre are now severely affected by food shortages. We have nearly 2000 boys and girls in our care. Can you help us protect our children during this difficult time and keep them fed?
Widespread protests have broken out in Guatemala following alleged interference in recent elections. Protestors have flooded Guatemala City and as many as 140 roads have been closed. This has affected our lifesaving education and poverty relief programmes, specifically Zona 13 Girlstown, Zona 21 day-care and Zona 6 Boystown - nearly 2000 children in total. Teachers are unable to reach the school, the Sisters have struggled to get fresh supplies of food and prices have risen dramatically.
The list for urgent supplies is long and the costs of these items are now at an all time high. We also have concerns for the safety and security of our schools . With additional funding we can ensure the Sisters have the funds they need to feed the children during this time and to take additional measures to safeguard the Sisters, staff and vulnerable children under our care.
Additional funding will allow us to ensure the programmes can continue during this tumultuous time and guarantee the safety and security of all those within the schools and as they travel to and from the programmes during these protests.
