COVID-19 continues changing our lives. But it is women who have experienced the impact more deeply. The progress made in the last decades in terms of gender equality already is being reversed.
According to the Observatory of Gender Violence in Costa Rica; unemployment for women today represents 30.4%; the time they dedicate to caring for other members of their families and domestic work has quadrupled; they experience a sharp decrease in demand and supply in their productive activities; they are less likely to be reached by social protection measures, and their health is generally negatively affected by reallocation of resources and priorities, including sexual and reproductive health services.
Children are witnessing and experiencing the consequences of this new reality as the Pandemic continues challenging society and especially women. From our scope of action, we keep working with children at Carpio community in San José, Costa Rica, adjusting and reorienting our actions to ease the social and economic impacts of COVID-19 on the children and their families.
We are helping them to have their basic needs met. In the last months, we support families with food, masks, hygiene products, electronic devices, and facilitating access to the Internet so that children can cope with the shift toward virtual education, we make sure girls have equal access and opportunities. In these ways, we are helping to reduce the children's families' socioeconomic stress, helping them process and cope with the daily situations in their homes, and therefore contribute to more peaceful interactions with less gender violence.
Thank you for supporting at-risk children in Costa Rica, you make a difference!
