Grow kits for calamity-affected farmers

Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami) caused significant agricultural losses in Cagayan, greatly affecting farmers in restoring their livelihoods. Thanks to the generous support of our donors through the GlobalGiving GrowKits fundraising campaign, we were able to provide vital assistance to these farmers, helping them cultivate and replant their lands once again.

Project update

With the funds raised, we distributed GrowKits to 10 farmers who were affected by the typhoon. Each GrowKit contained seeds of corn, okra, squash, and bitter gourd—crops that were carefully selected based on the consultation with farmers to ensure that the GrowKits will be able to address their planting needs.

Beyond seed distribution, we also integrated a knowledge-sharing component into the initiative. One of PPSA’s trained women farmers through the GrowHer Training of Trainers, Francisca Rimalos, shared her insights and experiences during the distribution. She shared her learnings and experiences in adopting climate-smart farming practices, helping empower recipients with knowledge to maximize their yield and resilience against climate challenges.

The farmers will also use the seeds to start a communal vegetable garden to serve as their demo farm in encouraging other farmers to adopt climate-smart farming practices. This will help make fresh and healthy food more accessible to farming families, contributing to food security and promoting vegetable consumption while providing an additional income stream for farmers, supporting their livelihoods and increasing household income.

Fran also shared that the donation of GrowKits is a rare opportunity for the farmers, “With the high cost of vegetable seeds nowadays, this is a great savings for farmers.”
