Summary

For every $1 invested in planting indigenous trees, $25 is returned and put back into a Kenyan farmers pocket through agroforestry over an eight year period, with the additional bonus of a 50 hectare indigenous forest being grown. With such a boost to each farmer, we can uplift rural economies, support sustainable practices, coexistence and ensure a thriving ecosystem and mountain community for those living on the slopes of Africa's second highest mountain, Mount Kenya.

Challenge

Mount Kenya's forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a biodiversity hotspot and vital water catchment. However, deforestation, encroachment, and overuse threaten its sustainability amid climate change and population growth. Many farmers, living on less than $2 a day, rely on degraded land, driving further deforestation. This reduces forest cover, harms biodiversity, and depletes water sources, leading to food scarcity and health issues-a cycle that must be broken for people and nature.

Solution

This project empowers 250 farmers to plant 50,000 indigenous trees across 50 hectares of degraded land, benefiting both people and nature. Through agroforestry, every $1 invested returns $25 over 8 years. It also supports local tree nurseries, providing resources for seedling growth and income generation. By promoting sustainable practices, the project helps restore Mount Kenya's forests while ensuring local communities prosper.

Long-Term Impact

This project's funds will support school fees, better farm investments, and local businesses, ensuring long-term financial security for families. Restoring 50 hectares of degraded land will reduce pressure on the forest ecosystem for future generations. Planting indigenous trees will enhance biodiversity, absorb carbon, and improve water catchments, strengthening community resilience to drought and climate shocks. The impact will be lasting and beneficial for both people and nature.
