At our children's home in Goma, war took everything from these kids except each other. Now hunger threatens what's left. We're building a vegetable and fruit garden so orphaned children can grow their own food, learn farming skills, and stop depending on food that never comes. Every seed planted is a step toward self-sufficiency, dignity, and a future these children can count on, no matter what happens outside our gates.
Conflict in eastern DR Congo has cut off food supply routes into Goma, and prices for basic staples have tripled. At our orphanage, children who already lost their families to war now face empty plates most days. Meals are skipped, growth is stunted, and caregivers stretch what little food remains. Without a reliable food source, these children risk malnutrition on top of the trauma they've already survived.
We are turning unused land beside our children's home into a working vegetable and fruit garden. Children and staff will plant, tend, and harvest crops like cassava, beans, and tomatoes, learning practical farming skills along the way. The garden will supply daily meals directly to the home and free up funds currently spent on food for medicine, schooling, and repairs. Excess produce can be sold to sustain the project
Beyond feeding children today, this garden teaches skills they'll use for life. Orphans who learn to grow food become adults who can feed their own families, breaking a cycle of dependency common among war-displaced youth. As the garden expands, it can support neighboring families facing the same food crisis, turning one orphanage's survival project into a model for community resilience across Goma.
