Greetings all,
Things have been quietly humming along with our partner communities, given that we're just emerging from winter here in southern Brazil. The bees are waking up and as the spring flowers bloom, honey production is increasing. This past weekend, Gabriela and Dr. Roberto Greco visited Guapiruvu for a weekend workshop on hive management and honey harvesting. They inspected the existing meliponarios to assess the health of each hive, helped divide the ones that were ready to be divided, and Gabriela demonstrated how to harvest honey from the healthiest hives.
Additionally, a few weeks ago, 7 students and 2 professors from Cardiff University visited UNICAMP on a test exhange program. They are engaged in various technology and biology projects, which they explored on and around campus, hosted by Dr. Greco. Afterwards, we took them on a visit to Vale do Ribeira to get to know our communities a bit better, including the bee projects. The weather was harrowing due to an extratropical cyclone that came ashore as the field visit began. But we successfully managed to visit the state parks in the region, Guapiruvu to talk with Gilberto and look at his hives, and Sitio Bela Vista Agroforest near Cananéia, which often help us out with bee education and outreach. It was a tremendous experience for everyone involved.
Keep in mind Giving Tuesday, coming up December 1st and help support our communities well into 2027!
With gratitude,
Lev
