Summary

GMC is committed to conserving wild lands to insure that the biodiversity, wildlife corridors, clean water, and the beauty of southern VT are protected forever. Since 2018, GMC has conserved the 1,266 acres-the Deer Run Nature Preserve (954 acres), Canoe Brook Nature Preserve (115 acres) and the Old Oaks Headwaters Preserve (197 acres). With your help, in 2025, it will conserve over 300 acres, home to moose, beavers, otters, bobcats, deer, porcupines, bear, and multitudes of other species.

Challenge

Vermont is losing wilderness acreage and trees due to overdevelopment and destruction of natural resources. Our resilience against climate change and our ability to sequester carbon is decreasing, our biodiversity and our water is threatened and our beautiful natural landscape is being destroyed, along with wildlife habitat and corridors. GMC identifies key wilderness areas for conservation. We must be able to quickly purchase and conserve these parcels before the environment is disturbed.

Solution

This project will provide funds, particularly upfront monies, that will allow GMC to move quickly when key properties are identified, engaging appraisers, ecological consultants and attorneys. Once GMC has purchased land, conservation and maintenance efforts such as property taxes, invasive species removal, trail and boundary maintenance, and enlisting ecological and naturalist professionals will also be supported by this fund.

Long-Term Impact

The acquisition and conservation of forest land in Vermont will help reduce the effects of climate change. Forests will grow unimpeded, so they age naturally, increasing their ability to sequester carbon and provide refuge for wildlife. An on-going wilderness sanctuary will endure for the wildlife and plant life to thrive. Travel corridors for the species that rely on on varying conditions for their survival will remain open. These lands will be accessible to all for recreation and education.
