Introduction
We are pleased to present this progress update on the Green is Gold project. During this reporting period, our primary focus remained community awareness and sensitization on basic waste management practices.
Although our long-term vision is to build a functional circular waste economy, we recognize that mindset change is the foundation—and this continues to be our most challenging yet vital task.
Many community members remain adamant and resistant to adopting proper waste disposal behaviors. To address this, the project has intensified its education efforts through media outreach, community meetings, workshops, and direct engagement with local leaders.
This phase emphasizes building understanding, correcting harmful waste practices, and uniting the community toward shared environmental responsibility.
Community Awareness & Sensitization Efforts
1. Media Campaigns and Digital Outreach
To reach a wider audience, we expanded our sensitization efforts across our media platforms, including social media pages, community WhatsApp groups, and short educational videos.
These channels have enabled us to:
Although engagement is growing gradually, continuous repetition and visibility are helping the community become more receptive to the message.
2. Village Meetings and Community Workshops
We conducted a series of village meetings, door-to-door mobilization, and community workshops focusing on:
These interactive sessions allowed us to answer questions, address misconceptions, and demonstrate basic sorting techniques.
There is still resistance, but we are encouraged by the community members who are beginning to show interest and participate more actively.
3. Collaboration with Local Council Leaders
To strengthen our impact, we continue to work hand in hand with local government units and village leaders.
While the local government emphasizes garbage collection and dumping at designated sites, there is still minimal investment in educating the population on proper waste disposal and sustainable management practices.
Our collaboration aims to fill this gap by:
This partnership is growing and remains key to achieving mindset change and fostering community ownership.
Challenges Encountered
1. Community Resistance and Low Behavior Change
Despite repeated awareness efforts, many residents still resist adopting proper waste management practices.
This resistance stems from long-standing habits, limited knowledge, and lack of enforcement mechanisms.
2. Limited Government Sensitization
The local government's focus is largely on waste collection logistics rather than educating communities on the importance of proper waste handling.
This leaves a gap in public understanding, which our project is striving to fill.
3. Need for More Consistent Engagement
Attitude change requires repeated, consistent engagement.
With limited resources, sustaining continuous sensitization remains challenging.
Emerging Opportunities
These positive signs indicate that while mindset change is slow, the foundation for community transformation is being built.
Conclusion
This reporting period has reaffirmed that community sensitization is the cornerstone of sustainable waste management.
Before we fully implement large-scale recycling and waste-to-value activities, we must first achieve community understanding and willingness to participate.
Through media outreach, workshops, stakeholder collaboration, and consistent awareness campaigns, the Green is Gold project continues to champion a cleaner, healthier, and more responsible community.
We extend our gratitude to GlobalGiving and all supporters for enabling us to continue this vital work. Your partnership is helping create the mindset shift necessary for long-term environmental and economic transformation.
