Empowering Deaf Youth Through Design Skills

By Bushra Azmat | Project Leader

Project Report

At Deaf Welfare Awareness Foundation (DWAF), our Graphic Design Lab continues to be a transformative initiative aimed at equipping deaf youth with in-demand digital skills and opening pathways toward sustainable livelihoods.

This is an ongoing, fully supported program where each batch consists of 25 deaf students undergoing a comprehensive 6-month training in graphic design. The program is designed to remove all barriers to learning—students are provided with full support including training, accommodation, and meals, ensuring they can focus entirely on skill development.

To maximize outreach and impact, the program runs in both morning and evening shifts, allowing us to train 25 students in each shift. Through a structured curriculum and hands-on learning approach, students gain practical skills in design tools, creative thinking, and real-world project execution.

One of the most impactful aspects of this initiative is our focus on outcomes. Beyond training, DWAF actively works to connect graduates with potential employers, helping bridge the gap between skills and employment. As a result, each batch has produced multiple success stories—young individuals who, despite facing communication barriers, are now earning, contributing to their families, and gaining confidence in their abilities.

The transformation we witness goes beyond technical skills. Students develop independence, self-belief, and a renewed sense of purpose. Families and communities also begin to see the true potential of deaf individuals, shifting long-held perceptions.

While the impact has been significant, the scale of this program remains limited due to funding constraints. With additional support, this initiative has the potential to expand and become a true game-changer—empowering many more deaf youth, creating employment pathways, and transforming lives at a much larger scale.

DWAF remains committed to continuing and growing this effort, with the vision of building an inclusive future where deaf youth are not only skilled but fully integrated into the workforce.
