Project Report | Jan 22, 2026
One farmer at a time

By Thereza Nalumansi | M&E officer, Act4Africa

For over a decade, Act4Africa has been at the forefront of improving food security in the heart of Mayuge through the Grains for Growth Program. We take pride in the successes achieved in Lwabala, including an increase in average harvests from 50 kg to at least 200 kg, improved availability of food for household consumption, and increased school attendance among farmers’ children. These achievements motivate us to continue reaching more farming families so that communities across Mayuge have sufficient food and can afford a decent standard of living.

In 2026, the program will shift its focus from Lwabala to Magada. So far, 25 vulnerable farmers have been identified to participate in the program, which will be implemented using the same proven approach.

The farmers will receive training in appropriate agronomic practices to help them increase their yields. A pre-planting training session is scheduled for February 2026 and will provide step-by-step guidance on land preparation for the planting season. Farmers will also be supported with high-yielding seed varieties to enable them to maximize their harvests.

Throughout the farming season, participants will benefit from close monitoring and continuous support from an agricultural expert to ensure that challenges encountered are addressed in a timely manner.

Prior to harvesting, a post-harvest handling training will be conducted to equip farmers with skills to properly handle and store grain, reducing losses caused by poor handling. Hermetic storage bags will also be provided to promote safe and effective grain storage.

Before the start of the training, a baseline study will be conducted to establish the farmers’ current status. This will serve as a reference point for measuring the impact of the program interventions at the end of the year.

Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to ensure that families have adequate food, remain healthy, and achieve sustainable livelihoods.
