A season of impact

Our Grain for Growth program has made tremendous strides over the past few months. Following last year’s training, the average harvest per farmer increased from 80 kg to 200 kg of grain.

This growth has meant that our farmers can now feed their families for longer periods. For example, Ibrahim, one of our farmers, shared:

“I used to harvest only 100 kg, but this time I got 400 kg! I was able to feed my grandchildren during the holidays and still store enough for home. I’m truly grateful.”

In addition, we were thrilled to learn that all participating farmers were able to contribute grain to schools, ensuring their children could have porridge at break time and a meal—posho and beans—prepared at school.

In a conversation with farmers, many expressed their relief:

“At least our children won’t be sent away from school this term due to an inability to pay for feeding.”

This shows that by helping farmers improve their agricultural practices, we are not only reducing hunger—and it’s devastating effects like malnutrition and death—but also indirectly promoting access to education. It’s a classic case of killing many birds with one stone.

In April, Act4Africa purchased more seeds and fertilizers and actively participated in planting maize alongside farmers in their gardens. This reflects the organization's strong commitment to ending hunger among families in Mayuge District.

Furthermore, we distributed seven grain silos to the leaders of the seven farmer groups in Lwabala Village. These silos will significantly improve grain storage and help prevent post-harvest losses caused by poor storage practices.

Challenges:
Some gardens have been affected by pests. Act4Africa plans to purchase pesticides to help farmers combat this issue.

Thank you so much for supporting our Ugandan farmers in Mayuge as they work to feed their families and build a better future.
