Earlier on in 2024, Esther faced what felt like an insurmountable challenge as a farmer. From her one-acre maize garden, she harvested less than 25 kilograms of grain—a significant loss that left her family struggling with food insecurity and limited income. The poor yields were the result of several compounding factors, including low-quality seedlings, pest and disease infestations, and prolonged drought. Esther feared her hard work would never translate into tangible results.
Recognizing the dire challenges facing smallholder farmers like Esther, Act4Africa’s Grain for Growth Programme stepped in to offer practical, life-changing support. Through an intensive training led by expert agronomists, Esther and other farmers learned best practices for crop management, pest control, and climate-smart agriculture techniques. Equipped with knowledge and practical skills, Esther felt a renewed sense of hope.
Additionally, Act4Africa provided Esther with access to high-quality maize seedlings specifically bred for resilience against harsh conditions. When fall armyworms attacked her crops during the second planting season, the organization quickly supplied her with spray pumps, insecticides, and fertilizers. These timely interventions saved her garden and set her on the path to success.
Following that, Esther was able to harvest over 500 kilograms of maize—more than 20 times her initial yield. This dramatic turnaround ensured her family’s food supply but also increased her household income. Esther plans to sell part of the grain to pay her children’s school fees, ensuring they can access the education they need to build brighter futures.
“I’m so excited for this achievement,” Esther shared, beaming with pride. “I give all thanks to Act4Africa for the training, tools, and support they’ve provided. I never thought I’d come this far.”
Esther's story is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of Act4Africa’s Grain for Growth Programme. By equipping farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive, Act4Africa is not only improving individual lives but also strengthening entire communities.
Esthe's future is now filled with possibilities—and it all began with the hope and support she found in Act4Africa’s unwavering commitment to empowering smallholder farmers.
