The Grain for Growth program stands out as a remarkable initiative dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of grassroots farmers in the rural district of Mayuge. In collaboration with generous donors and well-wishers, Act4Africa is actively working to bring smiles to the faces of farmers and their families. Our primary goal is to ensure that farmers not only benefit from their hard work but also have enough food for their households and surplus produce to generate income.
Through comprehensive training in both pre and post-harvest handling techniques, we have successfully enhanced farmers' knowledge. This includes practical methods to boost harvests, improve drying processes, and implement effective storage practices, ultimately minimizing grain loss. We are proud to report that the farmers' journey toward transformation is showing promising results.
A recent monitoring visit was conducted to assess the progress of the farmers, and their feedback speaks volumes:
Mirembe: "Following the training we received last year, we formed a group of five women and cultivated a piece of land measuring 50ft*150ft. Adhering to the trainers' recommendations, such as appropriate spacing and timely weeding, resulted in a harvest of 5 bags (500kg) of maize and 100kg of beans. This season, we plan to replicate the success on a larger piece of land to increase our production and positively impact our lives."
Babireba: "Having grasped the benefits of value addition, I have decided to mill my maize into maize flour to maximize profits instead of selling it as grain. This approach ensures both food security for my family and additional income through sales. Additionally, I intend to grind my groundnuts into paste for sale, anticipating greater financial returns than selling them as whole nuts. Thanks to the training from Act4Africa, I believe my farming practices are reaching new heights." Expressing gratitude, Babireba concludes, "Thank you so much, Act4Africa."
As we look ahead, we are gearing up for another round of farmer training sessions scheduled for this February. The objective is to empower farmers with enhanced preparation techniques, enabling them to make the most of the upcoming season. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our supporters for their continuous commitment to the Grain for Growth program. Together, we are sowing the seeds of positive change in the lives of these farmers.
