Empowering farmers in Mayuge

By Thereza Nalumansi | M&E Officer, Act 4 Africa

Act4Africa's Grain for Growth program has been instrumental in enhancing food production within the Mayuge Community over the past several years. In Uganda, numerous families grapple with dire poverty and the constant spectre of hunger, with approximately 29% of children experiencing malnutrition. In response to these pressing challenges, Act4Africa initiated a comprehensive training program aimed at equipping local farmers with a diverse set of agroecological farming practices. The results have been nothing short of remarkable, with significant improvements in food production across the region.

A recent follow-up assessment was conducted among the farmers who participated in the training held in March. The transformation witnessed among these farmers is truly astonishing. They have reported a noticeable increase in crop yields, largely attributed to their newfound knowledge of proper pre-harvest handling techniques. This surge in agricultural productivity brings us immense joy, as it directly translates into improved family nutrition. Act4Africa's overarching goal, through the Grain for Growth program, is to empower farmers to not only feed their families but also generate surplus produce for sale, thereby breaking free from the shackles of poverty.

One notable success story is that of Mary, whose maize harvest has skyrocketed from a modest 300 kilograms last year to an impressive 500 kilograms in the most recent season. This substantial progress serves as a testament to Mary's dedication and her commitment to implementing the best agricultural practices. She is enthusiastic about continuing to adopt these techniques to further boost her yields.

Similarly, Joshua has witnessed a remarkable transformation in his own farming endeavours. Previously, he could only manage to harvest 70 kilograms from his small plot of land. However, by diligently applying the knowledge gained from the March training, he was able to double his harvest to an impressive 130 kilograms. This substantial increase in yield not only bolsters his family's food security but also holds the promise of increased income.

Another farmer, Sam, shared his success story, reporting a harvest of six bags of rice compared to his previous yield of three bags. This surge in productivity is directly attributed to the improved handling techniques he learned through Act4Africa's training.

Esther's story is yet another shining example of the program's impact. Her harvest has grown from 500 kilograms to a substantial 700 kilograms, thanks to the enhanced handling practices she gleaned from Act4Africa's training sessions. Esther's improved agricultural skills have not only increased her family's access to nutritious food but have also put them on a path to economic stability.

We want to express our deep gratitude for your untiring support in ensuring that farmers are able to reap the rewards of their hard work and ultimately break free from the cycle of poverty. Your generosity and commitment to Act4Africa's mission are greatly appreciated, and we extend our heartfelt thanks for your invaluable contributions. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of these farmers, empowering them to build brighter, more secure futures for themselves and their families. Thank you so much for your continued support.
