Recent studies have ranked Busoga Region as the poorest in Uganda. With such a degree of poverty, families are unable to afford meals, which intensifies cases of malnutrition, especially in children and vulnerable adults, eventually leading to death.
Act4Africa through its Grains for Growth program continues to reach out to the indigenous farmers to 1) Change their mindset, 2) Train them on the best ways to plant and maintain their gardens for a better harvest 3) Train them on proper grain handling and storage mechanisms to prevent grain loss, a reduction in grain quality, and insect infestation.
We are thrilled that some of the beneficiaries trained who used the techniques learned in the training achieved higher yields than before. This ensures food supply for their families for a longer period of time, as described below:
“Before the training, I used to get only five bags of maize from my 1 acre of land. Thanks to the Act4Africa training, I managed to harvest 15 bags of maize from the same piece of land this previous season. With this knowledge and experience, I am confident my family will have food supply throughout the year, and my income will improve.” Narrated Esther.
“I have kept my groundnuts in the hermetic bags since July 2022. I am amazed that seven months later, they are still in the same good condition, and I will use them as seeds this coming season. Because of this storage method, I am not making any more losses. Thank you, Act4Africa for such a life-changing program." Said Mawazi.
In continuation of the success and impact of this program, we are excited that we will be working with a new cohort of 35 beneficiary farmers. These shall be taken through the pre-harvest training scheduled for March, to better equip them with knowledge of appropriate seed varieties, maintaining soil fertility and so on before they plant. Those in urban areas will receive training in backyard farming to ensure they can utilize their small spaces to grow their own food and increase food security and family income.
Thank you so much for your contribution towards ending hunger in Mayuge. Act4Africa is forever grateful
