This project will offer two monthly storytelling, puppet theater, and reading support sessions to 3,000 primary school students to help them catch up on the learning they missed during the 18 months of school closures due to Ebola. These sessions will be led by 12 specially trained local high school students.
The quality of education in the DRC is very low: It ranks 8th among African economies with a nominal GDP of approximately $123 billion in 2026. Globally, the country hovers around 80th place. had not read a book in the previous three months. Children in the DRC's primary education system live in extreme poverty and attend severely underfunded schools, which remained closed for 18 months during the pandemic. Twelve teenagers from the children's community will lead engaging storytelling, puppet shows, and reading support sessions at least twice a month for 3,000 children in six partner primary schools. These sessions take place during school hours.
Evaluations conducted with principals and teachers clearly indicate that this project "improves students' reading and writing skills," "sparks their interest in lessons," "enriches their repertoire of games and songs, and develops their expressive abilities," and that "the children respect the teenagers as much as their teachers." These benefits will reach 3,000 primary school students in the community in eastern DRC.
