Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,
We are incredibly excited to kick off the fall semester here at WashU! Since we last talked, the GROW (Grassroots On-Site Work) interns have returned from their summer with our partner in Uganda. Three of them worked at the Youth Resource Center, which served the urban youth of Iganga, one of the largest districts in Uganda. They helped create health education materials, trained peer health educators, conducted research about perceptions of menstruation among adolescents, and distributed 300 menstrual dignity kits, which included a 1.5 year supply of eco-friendly reusable hygiene products.
“It was an incredibly challenging, humbling, and inspiring experience, pushing us to renew our commitment to the movement for global health equity. " -Shyamolee Desai, Intern at the Youth Resource Center
We are also proud to launch a new local partnership this semester! As a part of GlobeMed, we are always striving toward global health equity and work with our partner organization abroad to improve access to healthcare in their community. With this in mind, our chapter has been thinking critically about how we can put this model of partnership into action in our own community to engage all of our chapter members in the fight for global health equity here in St. Louis. For this reason, we enthusiastically searched for an organization that had a parallel mission to our international partner and found our new partner Beyond Housing (BH). BH is a local organization that takes a holistic approach to improving the standard of living in their neighborhood, and we are so excited to ignite our partnership with them!
Lastly, we have also just launched our new website. With our revamped page, we are excited to share our journey and community with a larger audience. Check out the website at globemedwu.org.
The staff members of GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis and of Uganda Development and Health Associates are so grateful for your help in this past year. Without you, we would not be able to achieve our goals and make such concrete differences in people’s lives. We thank you sincerely for your continued support.
In Solidarity,
GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis
