Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,
As we wrapped up the end of our semester, our chapter was able to reflect on the work of our past year while welcoming the new Executive Board members and sending off our graduating seniors. We are delighted to say that we surpassed our 2014-2015 academic year-end goal of fundraising $17,500 for our partner organization, Uganda Development and Health Associates. Some of our campaign highlights from this year included cupcake sales, the Go! St. Louis Marathon fundraiser, Individual Giving, and our annual famous chocolate-covered frozen banana sale. Our efforts resulted in a grand total of $18,337, the highest amount fundraised in our chapter’s history.
Moving into the summer, our chapter is excited to be sending five members to both Iganga and Naigobya through the Grassroots On-Site Work (GROW) program. This is the largest cohort of interns that we have ever had the opportunity to send. While in Uganda, the interns will be working on two projects: supporting the Youth Resource Center aimed at providing health resources to children and young adults in Iganga and aiding the health clinic and community health worker system in Naigobya. They are excited to learn about how UDHA is making a substantial and sustainable impact through such an approach. Through the internship, we look forward to strengthening the GlobeMed/UDHA brotherhood and learning what true partnership and advocacy mean.
This fall, we are excited to continue to fundraise for a delivery of medical supplies for the Naigobya Health Center from Advocates of World Health. After a number of talks with the organization, Advocates of World Health agreed to supply our partner with over $100,000 of medical supplies for just $20,700. In the upcoming fall semester, we will have only $8000 left to fundraise for this project. In addition, we will be starting our Individual Giving push in the fall semester to help complete our fundraising efforts for the AWH project.
We will be kicking off the year with a full schedule of events, including Finals Gift Baskets, which typically raises $2000 though the sales of final exam care packages. We will also be continuing Pies for Progress, a pie sale held during Thanksgiving that has made $400 in previous years. Throughout the semester, we will be canning outside nearby grocery stores since these efforts can typically make over $400 per day. Snuggly Ugly, a favorite new fundraiser which raised $800, will bring the semester to a close as we sell holiday sweaters to students before we leave for Winter Break.
The staff members of GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis and of Uganda Development and Health Associates are so grateful for your help in this past year. Without you, we would not be able to achieve our goals and make such concrete differences in people’s lives. We thank you sincerely for your continued support.
In solidarity,
GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis
