Unplanned urbanization and poor management of drinking water supply system has been affecting residents of Kathmandu valley since decades. With around 5 million population in the Kathmandu valley, authorities struggle for equitable water distribution during wet season from few of the existing water reservoirs, whereas residents face water shortage problem every dry season. Most importantly, safety of drinking water cannot be guaranteed even in the piped water system.
Relating to this issue, ECCA recently supported two students to conduct vulnerability assessment of drinking water within the Kathmandu valley. Yash and Pratik are both students having an interest in environmental issues as well as climate learning. They took sample water from different two overhead water tanks and 20 user points and conducted E.coli test for each water sample. Water samples were directly taken from sources and had not gone through any water purification methods. According to them, the test showed that almost all the samples showed presence of E.coli bacteria. “This test has helped us to reason frequent outburst of water related illnesses in the Kathmandu valley”, they shared.

In addition to the test, they also conducted study on the chief causes behind water quality insecurity in the Kathmandu valley. The findings were presented in Asia-Pacific GLOBE Science Fair 2016 that took place from November 8 - 10, 2016 in Seoul, Korea. In fact, it will be shared in all possible platforms related to water & sanitation, so as to make the people aware about the need of using water purification methods.
