Supporting Youths in debunking Climate Myths

By Upama Tamla (Rai) | Media Associate

On 30th June, 2016, CREASION, a group of young and aspiring youths, organized a climate talk program in Wellness Organic Club, Kathmandu.  The objective of the program was to uncover climate change myths and inspire young minds to talk freely about debatable climate change issues. ECCA supported the program, in which more than 70 young people participated.

The event was started by Ms. Bhushita Vasistha, one of the board directors of Creasion. She gave brief description about CREASION, Debunking Myths and Climate Change. The program welcomed three speakers; Mr Prashant Singh, Founder and CEO of Himalayan Climate Initiative, Mr. Krishna Dev Hingaju, a young environmentalist and Mr. Sushank, a young speaker. Each speaker provided individual articulation of climate change as a myth and possible solutions. “Society, economy and environment have always been inter-related”, said Mr. Singh who emphasized on social and religious perspective, while Mr. Hingaju shared his personal experiences. Mr. Sushank explained climate change as a vital part of human existence. All speakers talked about the importance of conservative practices to be undertaken by the youths.

The final stage of the event was the interaction between speakers and the audience. Youths came up with different debatable ideas on climate change, finally staging an interactive platform of discussion.

“Nepal, a country so deeply submerged in the art of using strikes to enforce change needs to learn and accept that there are many more peaceful and less disruptive methods we can use to change the world and that we’ve been doing it all our lives – talking”, says Ms. Subekchhya, a member of Debunking Myths. “We also aim to inspire people to talk more sense and waste less time – to use facts to their advantage while also listening to good points made by any opposition.”

The event was well-appraised by the audience. Lastly, we thank all our donors and supporters for helping us empower students to learn climate change issues.
