After a year and a half of uncertainty around returning to in-person programming, Global Kids is thrilled that we have been running in-person at all but one of our schools this year. We have seen the change in our students and staff due to re-entering the classroom and after-school settings, and we are encouraged by what this has meant for their social and emotional health as well as their educational well-being.
Additionally, Global Kids was thrilled to announced Dominique Jones as the new Executive Director this past October. Within her first few months as Executive Director, Dominique was featured as on the Women Power 100 by City and State and was selected to be on the Mayor-Elect Eric Adams' transition committee as a memeber of the Human Resources Committee. We have no doubt that as we look into 2022 there are a lot of encouraging development for Global Kids and our youth.
Astoria Film Festival
GK youth leaders at William Cullen Bryant High School partnerered with Astoria Film Festival, Astoria NY this year. The GK youth learned about camera equipment, roles in production, and how to make a film, putting together a short film entitled: "In Your Hands", a story about fighting for corporate accountability and advocating for a more sustainable world. The Film premiered in October at the festival and GK youth had the opportunity to be on a panel, walk the red carpet, and met other young filmmakers in New York.
Middle School Programming
Our DYCD SONYC middle school programs have enrolled just over 300 students, collectively, and are seeing approximately 124 students daily. Students are participating in a math tutoring push-in programs to support the learning loss they have experienced over the last year. Our incredible staff are also working with students on a "Geeks Rule STEM" curricula and a Power to the People activities. Students have shared their enjoyment around the hands on activities of the programs. One of our middle school sites had a "Thanksgiving Snack Giveaway" where 41 students received brown bags fill with snacks and participated in a workshop on gratitude while also playing board games and working on relationship building actibities during lunchtime.
High School and Citywide Programs
We have 208 students currently enrolled in our DYCD COMPASS High School and Learn and Earn Programs with about 85 attending daily. With most of our high school staff working at multiple sites, they offered combined trips for students from HSGC, HSMP, HSPS and International HS to Randall's Island (Indigenous People's Day event) and a walking tour of Downtown Manhattan (Battery Park Urban Farm, The African Burial Ground and World Trade Center Memorial). Students from two of our high schools presented to their classmates 0on their Community Votes Project, sharing their goals on how to spread awareness to educate and encourage their peers and community around the importance of voting and having your voice heard.
This year Global Kids launched Media Movement virtually for 28 enrolled NYC and DC youth with staff from both places collaborating on curriculum and implementation (15 attend on average). As a group the students have identified four topics of focus for their group projects: Poverty, Gender Based Violence, Racial injustice/bullying and climate change. Students will use various forms of media and analyze how it is portrayed.
Council on Foreign Relations Roundtables
We have also resumed our CFR Roundtables virtually as the Council on Foreign Relations remains closed to in-person programs. The first session in November included 28 students, on Technology and Social Change featured Rachel Gillum Jackson, Director of Ethical and Humane Use of Technology at Salesforce. The second session was held on December 14 and and focused on Public Information Warfare featuring Col. Myles Caggins.
Community Schools
Our community school programs are designed to serve the whole school population. Collectively, we have over 400 students enrolled in our regular GK after school, lunchtime, and residency programming. Many of the programs have been focusing on one on one check ins with students to ensure student success after the last year and a half. Students have participated in career panels with professionals from BlackRock and many have enjoyed the College and Career programs, getting ready for their applications and putting together their FAFSA forms. They are also learning about professionalism and through workshops are improving their writing skills. At one of our largest sites we lanuched a new Mindfulness group with our restoritive justice specialist, and through our close work with the Multi-Tiered System of Support team, GK hosted two push-ins addressing issues such as suicide prevention and cyber bullying.
