Happy Spring from GlobalGirl Media! 2016 has been a very busy year thus far, as we have been working tirelessly on the largest initiative GlobalGirl Media has undertaken to date – Girls Govern.
GIRLS GOVERN
An initiative to launch a national campaign about how girls' rights need to be a larger part of the 2016 political dialogue, Girls Govern aims to encourage civic engagement among girls so that their voices will be heard.
We believe that young people can be mobilized to hold elected officials accountable about issues relevant to marginalized girls such as reproductive rights, violence against women, education reform, discrimination and immigration rights.
With the support of Participant Media and the Malala Fund through Students Stand #With Malala, this effort is a nationwide campaign involving a town hall forum, media trainings in swing states, and a comprehensive online digital contest. The project is non-partisan and focused on millennial engagement and youth leadership in the U.S., with opportunity for those from middle school to college.
Our goal is to facilitate the development of skills in young women through hands-on learning and civic engagement, ultimately enabling them to insert their voices into the political landscape.
The initiative is launching this month (May) with an online downloadable curriculum and digital contest, with the grand prize being a trip to our Town Hall in Washington D.C. this fall.
Stay tuned for much more to come on Girls Govern!

OAKLAND
GGM was thrilled to cover events leading up to the 2016 Super Bowl, most notably, the NFL’s First Annual Women’s Summit. With a grant from the Forever Young Foundation and The Superbowl 50 Host Committee, GGM Oakland reporters had the incredible opportunity to not only attend, but also interview trailblazing women in both sports and business. GGM GlobalGirl, Cheyenne, even had the opportunity to ask her hero, Serena Williams, a question.
With a grant from the AKONADI Foundation, GGM Oakland recently wrapped up our video project titled, “My BFF Oakland”. The five stories produced, highlight and celebrate open spaces and special places for young women in and around Oakland.
CHICAGO
Global Girl Media Chicago had an exciting spring. The women of Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri traveled to teach our students about college preparedness. Capitalizing on the great resources in the city of Chicago, the students were invited to visit the audio narrative making machine that is StoryCorps, and a tour of their state-of-the-art facilities.
The documentary powerhouse Kartemquin Films hosted a screening of short social issue driven films from the 70’s, with several of the subjects present. Our students asked pointed questions about the role of the female characters and how being apart of a documentary changed their perspectives. Learning how to engineer an instrument, the use of theater to express their voices. and a myriad of other great tools, Raw Voices Youth Media Festival 2016 was a huge success for the ladies of GGM Chicago.
Chicago Bulls Charities and Exhale Spa teamed up to give our students a lesson on breathing and being present with an evening of yoga at our building Gallery 37.
Rounding out our quarter of reporting on the streets of Chicago, GGM Chicago covered protestors in favor of location and building of the George Lucas Museum.

GlobalGirl Media Kosovo, in partnership with KosovaLive, has continued to churn out high-quality, engaging stories. So far in 2016, Kosovo GlobalGirls have explored Vegetarianism in Kosovo, Drug Addiction, and Dokufest, a film festival in Prizren now in its 14th year. The reporters discuss Docukufest’s 2016 theme of migration and examine the history of the festival, and how it has grown to a cultural and economic boost for the country. MOROCCO
As our Morocco Bureau gets up and running again, we’d like to share a blog written by one of our GGM Morocco reporters. Please read Salma’s thoughtful blog on Single Mothers in Morocco, where she discusses the stigma that surrounds these mothers in her country.
