GlobalGirl Media (GGM) is an nonprofit organization that develops the voice and media literacy of young women in underserved communities by teaching them to create and share digital journalism. Designed to improve scholastic achievement, our training also focuses on leadership and igniting community activism and sparking social change. We currently run projects in South Africa, Morocco, Kosovo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, and our newest location in London, U.K.
The female voice is under-represented in all media - from press, to radio, to film. This disparity of gender in media obstructs the ability of women and girls to influence change at local and global levels.
We're turning up the volume of girls' voices by celebrating and connecting girls globally. GlobalGirl Media focuses on innovative ideas for improving access to media and information for at-risk, underprivileged or otherwise resource-poor young women, giving them new tools to increase media literacy, which in turn helps them to engage in critical global dialogue about issues such as reproductive rights and human rights, violence against women, health, environment, peace and social justice.
Our long-term goal is to create sustainable models for building an international broadcast/web network of girls reporting on critical issues related to their lives. As we become more global and our audience expands, we hope to reach millions, via our new Broadband Channel with TV4, the GlobalGirl Media Channel, putting girls at the center of the story and reaching a global audience via a super-distribution platform that link to broadband initiatives such as Hulu, Amazon, roku, etc
