Summer Trainings
GlobalGirl Media (GGM) was thrilled with the trainings that took place in Chicago, Los Angeles and Oakland over the summer. Girls were trained on media literacy, journalism, blogging, video and sound production, and editing. In total, we trained 38 new GlobalGirls!
#LISTENOUTLOUD
During the 2015 Summer Training Academy, we launched our #LISTENOUTLOUD Campaign. Our major new Programming Initiative for 2015, the Campaign’s goal is to raise awareness about teen anxiety and depression among girls and help erase the stigmas attached to these issues.
The social media campaign for the initiative launched on September 18th and consisted of participatory videos and transmedia cross-promotion. Our efforts focused on raising awareness about the issues and communicating to all girls that they are not alone and that they do not have to suffer in silence. The culmination came with an in-person event on October 11th at the Jamba Juice store in Santa Monica, CA, for International Day of the Girl. See the complete PLAYLIST FOR LIVINGOUTLOUD.
New GGM Global Ambassador
Tammin Sursok, of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, is GlobalGirl Media’s new Global Ambassador. Tammin is passionate about empowering girls and women, and hopes to amplify GGM’s mission and work of empowering girls to find and share their voice through digital journalism around the world. Tammin’s first project with GGM was her involvement with our #ListenOutLoud social media campaign.
“As the Global Ambassador for GlobalGirl Media, I am excited to highlight the issues of young women that are often lost amongst the noise of traditional media. Now, more than ever, there is a need to support young women who face some of the most critical challenges imaginable. I believe the best way to start doing that is to give them a voice. And GlobalGirl Media, with the #ListenOutLoud social media campaign and support of Jamba Juice, is doing just that. I look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work.”
TEDx TALK
Amie Williams, GGM’s Executive Director, was invited to TEDx TALK WOMEN in Barcelona over the summer. Watch her inspiring TALK - AMIE TED TALK
SKYPE
At GGM, being a global organization doesn’t simply entail having locations abroad, but more importantly it entails connecting girls from those locations to each other. We encourage girls in all of our News Bureaus to learn from and about each other. In doing so, stigmas are replaced by knowledge and stereotypes become nonexistent. One of the Skype calls between our Oakland and Chicago reporters recently drew the attention of Skype Inc. Using their platform, girls in each region were able to have engaging conversations and understand each other better. See the article Skype published in their September blog.
GGM Kosovo
Our Kosovo News Bureau has been churning out the most amazing content! From featuring a story on the country’s top female racecar drivers to an expose on coal pollution – the girls are covering news that is not only engaging, but news that mainstream media often ignores. See their videos HERE.
GGM Oakland
The GGM Summer Media Academy Training in Oakland took place this year from July 6th - July 24th and was hosted at the Youth Impact Hub in Oakland. The girls had some great opportunities during the training including a visit to Jamba Juice headqueaters to learn about communications in the corporate sector ,and a trip to KQED where they learned about post production. See the videos they produced as part of our #ListenOutLoud series where the girls focused on two aspects of the issue – Body Image and Self-Harm. CAMILA’S STRUGGLE and SELF HARM.
GGM Los Angeles
Our Los Angeles training took place for the second year at Young Oak Kim Academy in Koreatown, a middle school focused on promoting STEM in its curriculum. The L.A. girls toured NPR Studios West in Culver City during the training where they were able to meet and interview top NPR correspondents. Their main video project, Culture of Silence, was included in our #ListenOutLoud series and focused on the cultural aspects of teen depression. Their short film was accepted into The Real to Reel Youth Media Showcase held in Los Angeles where it won an "Outstanding Film" award.
GGM Chicago
The GGM Chicago girls had a great summer training program, which included field trips such as a visit to the Chicago Field Museum. Here, they received behind-the-scenes access to some of the museum’s top collections and curators. This summer, our Chicago reporters covered Digital Divas, a program that encourages and supports girls to explore technology.
With elections and the Presidential race becoming more top-of-mind, the girls also explored the topic of Politics in Chicago. They interviewed youth and professionals in the hope of finding out what youth actually think about voting, their opinion on the true impact of their vote, and what issues they care most about.
