GGM's Rocio Ortega Reporting

Los Angeles

After working this past summer to create their six part video project focused on food justice in and around the Los Angeles community, GlobalGirls of LA have continued to explore food accessibility in their webisode series entiled,  “Food Forward.” You can learn more about vegitarianism among other food related topics HERE

GlobalGirl Rocio Ortega has been awarded Nickelodeon’s Halo Award! As a recipient of the award, Rocio has been recognized as one of America’s many young leaders as she quests for change. GlobalGirl has had the pleasure and honor of working with this phenomenal young woman, and we are excited to see her continue to inspire others with the diligent and earnest characteristics of a true GlobalGirl. Congrtulations Rocio, we are so proud of you!

GlobalGirls of LA have been requested at the prestigous MS Foundation Luncheon. They will be there to report on discission topics and interview various attendees.

Chicago

Much like the GlobalGirls in LA, GGM Chicago ladies have been on the go in their reporting. The girls have produced three new videos each focusing on a different topic.  In the video titled “ The Chicago Fund For Women,” globalgirls tour the The Chicago Fund For Women Conference and ask attendees about their view on issues plaguing women in Chicago. Next up, “BlackStone Bicycle Works,” a production focused on Chicago’s up and coming bicycle community and its relation to the Chicago community at large. In the last of the new videos, entitled,  “Nowhere to Somewhere, Three Women Stories from Chicago,” the GlobalGirls profile three inspiring Chicago Women who have worked tireslessly to turn awful nothings into a successful something.

Check out each new video here!

 South Africa

Like their sisters in Los Angeles and Chicago, GlobalGirls in South Africa continue to report on issues of interest. In one of their two new videos entitled “GGMSA-Love Life Counseling in Soweto,” reporters cover a counseling session that addresses relationships, drugs, and everyday life in Soweto. In video two entitled “Highway Africa Conference,” the globalgirls switch the setting, and attend the Highway Africa Conference, during which the girls interview and bare witness to the future of Journalism in Africa.

You can watch both videos here:

And even more good news! GGM has secured an office at the new IT Hub Center, Tshimologony Precinct Project in partnership with Wits University.

GlobalGirls Kamogelo Mabizela and Sthokozo Mabaso have been invited to attend the first International UNESCO Conference on Women and Media this December in Bangkok, Thailand! What an amazing opportunity to share and spread ideas of gender equality in the media. Way to go Girls!

Morocco

Along with GlobalGirls Kamogelo and Sthokoz in South Africa, Morocco’s own GlobalGirls, Rajae Hammadi and Laila Ait Oujamaa have also been invited to attend the first International UNESCO Conference on Women and Media. Congratulations to you ladies!

Through a small grant from the US Peace Corps, GGM reporters have been working on a 30-miunte documentary about sexual harassment, street harassment in Morocco, titled “Breaking The Silence,” and will launch this documentary on Nov. 25th, to coincide with the International Day of Awareness on Violence Against Women, with a live web stream event at Dar America, in Casablanca

GGM Reporters  Karima and Ahd from Tetouan worked on a ten-minute video about the FORSATY PROJECT, an initiative of the International Organization of Migration (IOM) about youth training and alternatives for school dropouts in Northern Morocco.

Congratulations to our new Program Director Hasnae Fathi, as well as our new Production Director Najlae Benmbarek!
