GGM - ME Programs Report - March 2011

By Iris Ichishita | Project Manager

We at GlobalGirl Media are excited to share the progress we’ve made with our 2011 Middle East programs. In this report, we’ll update you on: the status of our forthcoming Detroit Academy and Bureau, developments with our ME partners, details on being shortlisted for the Secretary’s Award, and our partnership with Youth Noise.

GGM DETROIT

Our Motor City academy and bureau is revving up for Summer 2011. In partnership with the Arab American Museum, the first museum in the nation dedicated solely to exhibiting and celebrating the accomplishments of Arab Americans, and Community Curator and independent mediamaker Joan Mandell, our future GGM Detroit reporters now have a venue and a project manager.

MIDDLE EAST HERE WE COME!

In the summer of 2010, I had the privilege of visiting future program sites in Beirut, Amman and Cairo. I was encouraged by potential partners’ responses to GGM as well as moved by the overwhelming need for GGM’s programs. As one NGO director recounted, young girls are the most marginalized in already marginalized and challenged communities in the Middle East. Thus we are steadily moving forward with our ME programs that will help give a voice and a platform to girls who are at risk of being unheard and invisible.

In Beirut, Al-Jana Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts is a committed partner with access to young girls in refugee camps and media resources. They also oversee the first and longest running children’s film festival in the Middle East, which will be a great showcase for GGM video productions. In Amman, we have commitments from both the Royal Jordanian Film Commission, which handles media projects large and small, as well as from independent media distributor www.aramram.com, which has its hand on the pulse of the youth media revolution in Jordan. And, last but not least, in Cairo, we have strong leads with the American University and established NGO Media Arts for Development.

EMPOWERMENT AWARD

GGM is extremely proud to announce that it has advanced to the third and final round of the Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. Secretary Clinton and her staff will announce the winners (two of the final five shortlisted organizations) in March 2011. Its has been an exhilarating experience to be recognized by the Secretary’s office for the work GGM has done in Los Angeles and Soweto as well as for the work we propose to do in the Middle East and domestic sister cities in 2011.

YOUTH NOISE

In addition to the many exciting developments, GGM is happy to share with its supporters the partnership developed with Youth Noise, Link TV, and ViewChange.org. This strategic partnership will introduce technology to and extend the reach of GGM content. The effect or our videos and blogs will be enhanced by semantic web tech, which connects content to resources and actionable next-steps. And our work will reach an additional 44 million viewers and 170,000 followers.
