Summary

Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire (RRFB) is focused on boosting the abundance, genetic diversity, and resilience of coral reefs in Bonaire, as they face mounting threats. In 12 years, we've restored 13,000+ square meters of reef and outplanted 60,000+ corals with support from our local and global community. This Giving Tuesday, your donation can help us significantly scale our efforts - expanding nurseries, coral breeding technology, and inspiring future ocean stewards.

Challenge

Bonaire's coral reefs are rapidly declining, due mainly to severe bleaching, rapid disease spread, and more climate-related threats. Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) has caused over 80% mortality in some species, threatening not only this critical ecosystem but also Bonaire's tourism-based economy. Globally, coral reefs protect coastlines, sustain biodiversity, and support fisheries that feed over 1 billion people. Without effective restoration, these vital ecosystems face collapse.

Solution

RRFB has spent over a decade adapting restoration techniques to Bonaire's reefs, establishing a leading role in the Caribbean restoration network. Our production-line approach to coral propagation allows us to scale efforts significantly. By selectively breeding corals that exhibit resilience to stressors like bleaching and SCTLD, we prepare populations for current and future threats. Our adaptive strategy not only boosts coral resilience but also serves as a model for restoration worldwide.

Long-Term Impact

This project will enable RRFB to scale our adaptive strategy, enhancing fragmentation, coral breeding, and education. By addressing current and emerging threats to our reefs, we aim to protect biodiversity and support local economies reliant on tourism. With a goal of raising $20,000, we will continue to focus on new species vulnerable to SCTLD and explore mitigation techniques to combat bleaching. Our efforts will engage more community members in restoration via education and partnerships.
