Healthcare Support .
Reducing the burden of cancer treatment for needy patients and their families in rural areas and slums in Kenya.
1. Summary of Progress:
Access to healthcare remains a significant challenge for many needy families affected by cancer in Kenya and other develping countries.
2. Activities and Progress:
(i). Health Insurance Premiums:
Through your generous support, during this period Six Bridges Foundation paid mandatory annual health insurance coverage for more patients We supported eight mothers living with melanoma ,cervical and breast cancer. We also supported a child diagnosed with orbital sarcoma through payment of health insurance coverage and hopital bill top up for a female teenager who was undergoing suregry for Jaw bone or mandible cancer.
(ii). Education Support for cancer orphans and needy children:
Our top prioirty has been to keep many orphans and needy children from families affected by cancer in school. The year 2026 school calendar started in the first week of Janaury 2026. Your generous support helped us to pay school fees for six orphaned boys and children from families affected by cancer,we aslo povided essential school items and stationery to these children.
(iii). Monthly Food Support:
Through your kind donations, you helped us to povide monthly food basket to the most needy families facing severe poverty and the devastaing effects of cancer to theuir families.
(iv).Psychosocial Support:
We conducted psychosocial support through home out reach and group programs for needy patients, orphans and children whose parents are battling cancer.
3.Results and Impact:
(a). Health Insurance Premiums:
This helped to ensure these needy patients continued to access specialized care that they direly need. By giving insurance support we ensured that no patient missed routine treatmnet ,drugs and doctors appoinmnets. Through your support ,you helped to save lives and to give hope to these patients who would not have accessed medical care.
(b). Education Support for needy :
This helped to reduce schoool absenteeism and also prevented school dropouts.Your generous support conitunes to ensure these children remain in schoool, otherwise they would have dropped out of school. This has also given them assurance of going on with their education without interruption. They will continue schooling and be able to concentrate with their stuides without thinking about the problems in their families back at home. The school fees support has also reduced the huge financial burden on these needy families battling cancer.Together we continue to give them hope for a better future.
(A CASE OF IMAPCT); One young boy who lost his single mother in 2025 to cancer was at risk of dropping out of school due to unpaid school fees. Through the school fees support he received in February, he returned to school and shared that he now feels hopeful again about his future. He has promised to wrok hard while in school so that he can become a doctor and in turn be abe to help other needy patients in memoery of his late mother.
(c). Monthly food support to families affected by cancer:
We together ensured that no patient took chemotherapy on an empty stomach, you helped the patients to continue with treatment without having to worry about the next meal. We also prevented cancer orphans from facing starvation by at least giving them hope for a basic meal.
(d).Psychosocial Support:
The psychosocial support provided a safe space for emotional expressionforthe parients , peer connectionfor the orphans and resilience building,we together encourged and gave hope to these needy individuals and families.
4.Challenges and Lessons Learned:
(i).Rising medical costs and the ever increasing demand for support continue to place pressure on available donor resources.
(ii). There is a very high number of needy patients seeking support for annual insurance cover,we are now completely overwhlemed during to lack of funds.
(iii).High demand for food support and the rising cost of food due to interntainal fuel crisis.
We are faced with a very serious problem whereby needy poatients are calling every day asking for food support. At the same the cost of basic food commodities has risen sharply due to international crisis. The needy are the most affected.
(iii). Many needy children still need school fees support:
We still have many needy children wating for school fees payment in order to continue with their studies without interruption. It is very painful when orphans and needy children approach us for support but we are helpless due to lack of funds. We fear to to give them false hope becasue it hurts to turn a needy child an orphan away. Without more funding we are faced with asreious crisis.
(iv). The psychosocial support pogram though helpful might collapse due to,lack of funding. Many needy patients feel they require food support than emotinal support due to extreme poverty.Whenever we visit the patients in their homes empty handed without something forthem to eat ,they do not open up about the challenges facing them, there is always a disconnection in communication.
5.Long Term Goal is to enhance odonor funding campaign:
We are now faced wit a serious shortage of donor funding.Every new day is posing new challenges due to a very large number of needy patients asking for daily help yet we do not have the funds to cater for their demands. We continue to appeal for support from donors and well wishers both locally and internationally.
