#NoMoreDropouts

By Aman Chhabra | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Did you know that as per the data available through DISE (District Information System for Education), the dropout rate for girls studying in upper primary classes is close to 4.6%? Wondering why? There are a variety of reasons like unsafe environment, harassment, poverty, and girls being seen as a liability who should be married of early instead of getting educated.

Once the girls drop out, they are married early and have children which again has health implications for them as well as the new born. When they themselves have to have a child, they prefer not having a girl because they know how difficult it will be for her in the future. These girls remain uneducated, are unable to understand their own rights and therefore often become victims of domestic violence and exploitation.

As an effort to highlight the need to tackle this issue, Breakthrough launched a campaign to raise awareness on the issue of girls dropping out from upper primary classes. The campaign was an effort to raise awareness (and funds!!) for 1798 girls (we have around 39,100 school going girls in our project areas so, 39100*4.6%). Our aim from this campaign was to make our supporters, which includes you dear donor, understand how dropping out from school for these girl children will not only affect their life adversely, but also the overall situation in the society.

Here's our very own Roki Kumar talking about some ground realities in the state of Haryana! Do give it a listen.

Our work of course doesn’t end with this campaign. We do look forward to your continued support to our efforts, like the #NoMoreDropOuts campaign, to see more and more girls not just enroll into schools but complete their education. This campaign directly fits into our Taaron Ki Toli programme as well and encourages boys & girls to be equals and stand up for what’s rightfully theirs- EDUCATION.

Thanks and Regards,

Jocelyn Jose and Aman Chhabra.
