Keystone Accountability has always worked on amplifing the voices, views and opinions of those affected by development projects. We work on helping social change organizations listen and respond to those they are seeking to help.
Now we are also turning our attention to the internal culture of international non governmental organizations and social change organizations. Are they as inclusive, equitable and diverse as they should be? Are minorities marginalized or treated with respect? And what can be done to improve things where there are problems?
The #metoo movement and recent revelations of criminal behaviour by international non governmental organization staff have rocked the development world. While shocking, they are sadly not surprising to many working in international development. Abuse of power in many forms is more common than we would like to think.
Organizations have a duty to provide a safe, respectful and inclusive working environment. Despite this, power abuses, discrimination and harassment do happen. Despite best efforts, safeguarding and whistleblowing policies are not effective at unearthing repeated and systemic issues relating to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Staff don’t trust these systems or fear repercussions if they report problems.
Keystone Accountability is developing a confidential, independently operated survey which will enable organizations to see where such issues are occurring. Without this information these issues are almost impossible to address.
This survey will provide managers with data on the perceptions and experiences of colleagues as well as highlight their suggestions for improvements to the working culture. Without this data is difficult for even well intentioned managers to take action.
We are developing this vital survey alongside our existing work and it takes time to get it just right. Any donations towards supporting this work would be gratefully received.
