Herewith Biblionef’s report on the storybooks to be donated to the 18 Primary Schools in Vuwani area in Limpopo Province. We received more than R20 000 to execute this project. Biblionef have contacted the Chief Education Specialist at the Vhembe District office of the Department of Education and he will be our liaison person for the duration of the project. He will contact each of the 18 schools and inform them that they will benefit from a donation of Biblionef books in Tshivenda. The Biblionef staff will not only bring the books to these 18 schools, but we will also have discussions with the teachers on the importance of instilling a love for reading. We hope to motivate the teachers why reading is so important to do more storytelling and have regular reading sessions in the class. The handover of the books will take place in February.

Here are some impact that we hope to bring about with this project.

  1. We believe that access to books will create: geniuses, better education, job opportunities, better lives, enjoyment and the ability to think independently, creativity, good imaginations, an end to ignorance, curiosity, new thinking, open minds, the ability to find solutions to problems, good decision-making ability, awareness, literacy, general knowledge and access to information.
  2. Our goal is to see that a culture of reading for pleasure has been instilled in a majority of the children we target.
  3. Our books should stimulate and develop the children’s imagination and fantasy and help themdevelop their reading and learning abilities.
  4. Children will have learnt to read in their own language which will help them to understand concepts and make it easier for them to learn in a second language.
  5. The picture books we donate will help teachers to teach very young children how to look at pictures and interpret what they see. They will have acquired listening skills and will begin to link imagination with what they hear and see.
  6. Biblionef promotes the telling of stories from our books as storytelling is one of the basic elements for children learning to read.
  7. An additional goal is to motivate the teaching staffs who will have gained motivation from having access to storybooks as they are frequently trying to teach reading with the barest of resources and nearly non-existent budgets.
