Summary

Global Infancia will build sanitary facilities and install a new drainage system for Padres Unidos, a rural school in Carapegua, Paraguay. The new building will make it possible to maintain minimum standards of hygiene, reducing the risk of disease in the school and the wider community. In the long term increased access to sanitation facilities will transform the conditions for healthy learning, and positively impact on the overall development and emotional well being of 200 children and staff.

Challenge

Padres Unidos is a rural school in Paraguay, with limited government funds. Parents invest food or labour, but lack financial resources for bigger infrastructure projects. 200 children and staff share a single toilet without a functioning flush and the only sink doesn't have any taps, making it difficult to maintain personal hygiene. Children have to wait so long that sometimes they wet or soil themselves, or delay going altogether. This also disrupts pupils' learning and concentration in class.

Solution

Global Infancia will construct a building with enough toilets and sinks for girls and boys, plus a new drainage system to ensure the safe disposal of human urine and faeces. Hand-washing facilities will improve hygiene and prevent the spread of infections through contamination. Children will drink knowing they can empty their bladders regularly, reducing the risk of tiredness, dehydration, constipation and urinary tract infections associated with poor fluid intake and "holding it in".

Long-Term Impact

This project improves the health, education and happiness of over 200 children and staff at a rural school in Paraguay. Access to better and more sanitary facilities will reduce the risk of disease in the school and wider community. Children's learning will improve because they are less stressed and better able to concentrate in class instead of focusing on the physical discomfort of a full bladder, positively impacting on their overall development and emotional well being in the long term.
