It is the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world: the conflict in Yemen that has been going on since March 2015 has plunged the country into immense hardship. More than 24 million people depend on humanitarian aid - around 80 percent of the population. Together with our partner organisations, we are on the ground to prevent hunger and the spread of diseases.
Since the escalation of the conflict between Houthi rebels and the government more than 3.6 million people have been displaced from their homes. They live in often inhumane conditions in makeshift camps. More than 17 million people have no safe access to drinking water. The number of people suffering from hunger has grown steadily in recent years. Two thirds of the population suffer from food insecurity, more than 7 million people are dependent on food aid.
To prevent hunger and malnutrition, we support bakeries with equipment and baking materials to increase the production of bread significantly. Community committees will organize the distribution of vouchers to 700 beneficiary families. Against cholera, people get hygiene kits and information. We are also building latrines for 300 families. With the help of tank trucks and water treatment tablets, we are improving the supply of clean drinking water and repairing public drinking water points.
This is an emergency aid project. A lasting effect is achieved by improving the working conditions and equipment of the bakeries. This enables them to achieve minimum production standards and produce more bread in the long term in order to secure the nutrition of the communities.
