Many US-born minority students will graduate college having never owned a passport or traveled outside the US. First Trip seeks to award 20 short-term study abroad scholarships of $750 to underrepresented students at HBCUs in the Washington DC area. Our goal is to increase diversity in study abroad by alleviating financial and other inequitable barriers for students to travel abroad for the first time, your donation will help us develop a new and diverse generation of global citizens!
As the world becomes more globalized, employers seek candidates who can work with and within different cultures. Additionally, students with international experience(s) become leaders that add strategic, and often, unparalleled value to their organizations. According to the NAFSA: Association of International Educators, African American students represented a mere 6.1% of study abroad participants in 2018. Access to funding is the easiest way to increase minority participation in Study Abroad.
First Trip promotes global engagement by conducting passport workshops and awarding study abroad scholarships to underrepresented students at community colleges and universities. Awards are available for students traveling abroad for the first time. Additionally, our passport workshops teach how to successfully navigate the DS-11 passport application form and supporting documents. Thereby making it easier for students to prepare for foreign travel. Students also receive passport photos on site!
We hope our work not only make study abroad more inclusive, but to also inspire cultural awareness and global citizenship.
