Summary

This project will provide scholarship funding to allow 50 vulnerable children to attend primary or secondary school in the greater Jinja area in southeastern Uganda. These are children whose parent or caregiver does not have the financial resources to pay the school fees required to enroll and keep them in school for a year. Services include regular academic assessment with teachers, child and parent monitoring, and intervention as needed to ensure the children attend and remain in school.

Challenge

1 out of 5 Ugandan children drop out of school due to rising poverty, child marriage and child labor exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. Many are among the UNICEF-estimated 2.5 million orphans living in Uganda, most of whom lost their parents or caregivers as a result of HIV/AIDs. They have experienced the trauma of parental loss, ongoing extreme poverty and food insecurity. Without money to pay school fees, they drop out of school, become pregnant and feed a cycle of intergenerational poverty.

Solution

Community Concerns Uganda Initiative provides scholarships to pay the school fees for these orphans and vulnerable children. Services include ongoing academic monitoring and support plus financial literacy, vocational training and other necessary education to their caregivers to enable them to adequately provide the home environment necessary to keep their children in school.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide primary and / or secondary school scholarships to 50 children so they can remain in school. Educational and vocational skills training will also be provided to their caregivers, enabling them to better support their families by increasing their overall household income. With respect to caregivers, the goal is to give them the means to pay school fees for their children without outside support.
