At SHEOWS we aim to provide a better life to the elderly and ensure their welfare by focussing on their physical as well as mental health.
Our main focus is to provide the elderly with basic facilities such as food, accommodation, clothing and medical facilities. Most of the elderly rescued are suffered from various Physical and Mental disorders. Therefore, in order to treat them and improve their health condition we maintain in-house medical facilities so that these can be provided to our residents on a continuous basis so as to ensure significant improvement in their health status.
Our in-house medical facilities include 24x7 hours Doctors and Nurses and Pharmacy, a Special Care Unit with 10 beds to provide treatment to critical patients, Physiotherapy Center with latest medical equipment and Pathology Lab to carry out various tests including LFT, KFT, CTC, Blood Sugar, HIV Test, Lipid Profile etc. for diagnosis and providing better treatment to the patients as well as to monitor and examine their health.
The elderly are picked up from the streets from our rescue vans, brought in by Police, sent by Government Hospitals and other organisations. When the elderly are brought in they are immediately provided with the primary medical treatment. If they are in a Critical condition they are directly referred to Special Care Unit.
Most of the elderly at the Old Age Home suffer from Physical and Mental Disabilities. Physical disabilities include Arthritis, Fracture and Paralysis. The treatment for these is provided continuously at our Physiotherapy Center and at least 60 elderly are provided with Physiotherapy sessions daily. In the year 2017-18, 388 elderly benefitted from the Physiotherapy sessions and more than 26,000 sessions we carried out throughout the year.
Around 200 elderly residents in our Old Age Home having mental disorders such as Alzheimer and Dementia are being taken care of. They are provided with regular medication as prescribed by the neurologists. Senior Neurologist visits the Old Age Home at least thrice a week. In the previous year there were 1080 check-ups by the Neurologist.
Also, special campaigns such for specific disorders are organized. In this year we organized an Eye Check-up campaign for our residents and 42 patients were diagnosed for vision disorders such as impaired vision, cataract, and other discomfort with the eyes. 32 people also received eye glasses. It has lead to an improvement in the ability of the inmates to carry out their daily tasks on their own. A dental health check-up was also organized which covered 60 of our residents.
If the treatment can not be provided in-house for diseases such as Cancer, Diarrhoea, TB etc, we also ensure that we get the treatment for our residents through Government hospitals.
Till date we have saved more than 4,000 lives by providing quality medical facilities to the elderly. We would like to express our gratitude to all our donors and supporters for supporting the elderly and SHEOWS. It is only with your compassion and support that we are able to reach out save lives and bring joy and laughter in them. You make a difference to the lives of the elderly people in our Old Age Home. Gratitude and Blessings.
