Action for Mothers and Children (Akcioni per Nena dhe Femije) provides trusted, evidence-based education on pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care to families across Kosovo through its Mothers' Classes program. Led by trained midwives and nurses, sessions help pregnant women and new parents feel informed, supported and prepared to give their children a healthy start. By training healthcare professionals to deliver these classes as part of their daily work, the program ensures lasting impact.
Many pregnant women in Kosovo, especially in rural and underserved communities, lack access to reliable maternal health information. They often receive conflicting advice from informal sources, leading to confusion and delayed care. Kosovo's child mortality rates remain significantly higher than in Western Europe, with nearly 9 deaths per 1,000 children under five (UN estimates). Limited access to accurate guidance during pregnancy increases risks for both mothers and newborns.
AMC's Mothers' Classes program provides free, practical health education in primary healthcare centers. Led by trained midwives and nurses, sessions combine videos, discussion and peer support to cover topics including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and early newborn care. By replacing myths with evidence-based information, the classes build confidence and encourage women to seek timely care, helping them make informed decisions for themselves and their babies.
Since 2015, more than 25,000 pregnant women and parents have participated in Mothers' Classes. The program supports healthier pregnancies, safer births and improved early childhood outcomes, while strengthening trust in the health system and building more informed, confident families across Kosovo.
