Music Helps Marnie Take on Challenges

Marnie Performing at ETM-LA's 20th Year Gala

Thank you for your dedication to providing students with access to high-quality yearlong music education in under-resourced schools across Los Angeles County. Your commitment has given Marnie, a 5th grade choir student, the means to persevere and build her self-confidence. Marnie’s mother shares:

Music has changed the way Marnie sees the world. [She] had a lot of anxiety, stress, and lack of confidence. Music has helped give her the confidence to try new things...she takes on every challenge that comes her way and masters it. The experiences that my daughter has had - all before middle school - have taught her so much...it has been the best year yet.

Marnie also confides that music has given her the strength to overcome hardship:

“Music has helped me get over challenging things from my past, like being bullied. It has helped to calm me, and to know I will overcome and grow strong.”

Music and arts education provide life-changing benefits; over 85% of surveyed ETM-LA partner school principals witnessed an improvement in students’ attitudes towards school and the arts. California Education Code requires schools to offer sequential arts education to all students. Yet, only 11% of California schools meet these state requirements (Arts for LA, 2024). Marnie expresses why every child needs music education:

“Other students like me [should] have the opportunity to express themselves through music. If other students have opportunities like we do, they might find new joys in music like we have.” - Marnie

Celebrating our 20th Year, we want to thank you for your generosity and heart. Each note and musical step have turned into life-changing milestones for students, music teachers, and our schools.

Because of you, ETM-LA has:

• Provided high-quality, sequential music education to over 180,000 students
• Guided 15 schools to graduate from ETM-LA, sustaining their music programs independently
• Inspired over 150 music teachers to further grow and advance their careers in music education

Thank you for your belief in our mission to ensure that all children have hope for a brighter future through music.
