Where Hope Begins

Jeremy arrived from Santa Catarina Juquila, a small town near the coast of Oaxaca, with his family to Oaxaca de Juarez the capital city. They arrived with hopes of improving their standard of living. Jeremy did not attend pre-school and meanwhile his family life was complicated in various aspects.

Since he displayed significant educational gaps the primary school he was enrolled in required him to attend regularization courses for some subjects.

Fortunately, one of their neighbors shared information about Centro de Esperanza Infantil Casa Emily Xoxo. This is how they became a part of the Open House program. With the help of tutor, psychology program, meal program, and sociocultural programs he became well integrated in his primary school. As a result he ranked one of the top students during the first trimester’s grade evaluation.

In Casa Emilie Xoxo, Jeremy took part in the First LEGO League, which is a global program aimed at inspiring children between the ages of four and 11 to explore the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subject areas through practical and exciting challenges. The First LEGO League program became part of Casa Emilie’s curriculum since 2022. Jeremy, along with the rest of the team, presented a sustainable solution for the current contamination of oceans through plastic waste. In the regional phase of the competition, which took place in Cancun and virtually on January 29th, 2025, Casa Emilie’s team received the award for the best model.

Jeremy attends Casa Emilie Xoxo alongside his brother Tiago, who is currently nine months old, and his mother. Tiago has benefited from the Early Stimulation program. Through his participation in the program Tiago has begun to crawl; and his mother has kept up with his medical check ups and vaccines.

Since enrolling in Casa Emilie’s open house program, Jeremy and his mother began attending appointments with the psychologist. The psychology program has allowed them to overcome many of the challenges they faced. His mother learned parenting strategies such as the effectiveness of consequences vs punishments. She also learned how to apply an activity schedule to give permissions or place boundaries; that way everyone in the home is aware of their responsibilities which results in the completion of tasks without having to beg or scold for completion

In the words of Jeremy:

“Since I arrived at Casa Emilie Xoxo, they have helped me to learn how to read. Before, I hadn't learned all the letters or numbers. I enjoy coming every day to eat, attend workshops, and be a part of the LEGO team. I like coming because they explain a lot of things such as our rights, and we can learn and play. They also give us food. My favorite meal is pozole. I hope to continue attending with my mom and brother, because we have a lot of friends here.”
