In Indonesia, most of the new school academic year for 2020 - 2021 has been started since the beginning of August, which is about 2 weeks ago. There is no official statement about changing the rule of distance learning to offline as usual for this new academic year. Therefore, the government was instructing the students to remain studying from home. This policy was released by the Department of Education as a program during this pandemic for public school, which most of XSProject – XSEducation children are from.

As usual, one of the routines that they still have to do even when studying from home is wearing their formal uniform. From the past several years of experiences before the pandemic, children would look forward to receiving new school essentials, such as a backpack, shoes, school uniform, and stationery. This year, all the students from elementary up to high school have the opportunities to get the school essentials that they need.

Several obstacles should be solved by increasing discipline between parents and their children. Other than that, parents are having problem to teach their children about the school materials. Some are also struggling with the use of the internet as the medium to connect between school and children, the internet connection, and lastly, is the use of wi-fi as it is not applicable for everyone. Although everyone is having a hard time during this challenging time especially focusing to study at home, the children are still keeping their spirits up to acquire the knowledge from school.

Nevertheless, with the help from donator through GlobalGiving XSProject – XSEducation, children in Cirendeu are able to continue their education every day.

Since April 13, the children have to study from home.  Like many places, schools have been suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Education and Culture with Indonesian Public TV (TVRI) have prepared a daily program to support distance learning and at the same time to help students appreciate Indonesian culture.  The program is an alternative for poorer students who cannot afford computers and fast internet to study from home

This program is from Kindergarten through HS, and benefits both the parents and also teachers. Parents don’t have to look for activities to keep the children busy.  The students can do fun homework and send the answers to their teacher with WhatsApp from a mobile phone.  At the end of the program they will learn about their art and culture.

The schedule is from Monday to Friday. It starts from 8 – 8.30 for the Kindergarten, from 8 to 10.00 for Primary School, 10.30 to 11 for Middle School, and 2 until 2.30 pm for High School.  There is also information about education for the parents and teachers, followed by selected Indonesian movies until evening.

We encourage the mom to accompany the children while they are following the program.

With your donation through GlobalGiving XSProject-XSEducation, we are able to send the children to better public school, so they can be part of Distance Learning. Otherwise they would probably go out picking trash with their parents.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all schools in Jakarta have closed and children must study from home.  This includes the children at the Cirendeu dump site. Our Primary, Middle School High School and College students are staying at home, with limited source and tools to continue studying from home.

Trash pickers are among the most vulnerable people.  There work was already dangerous and susceptible to the corona virus, but they must keep working to survive.  Earning such a low income, they cannot afford the means to protect their family from the virus.

Even though they must keep collecting trash, they are now more aware of precautions they need to take concerning Covid-19.  This includes using gloves and masks, and regularly washing their hands.  But because they live in a cramped environment “physical distancing” is difficult, and masks, even if they can be found, are expensive.

XSProject is trying to assist by making sure the children have proper food, supplements, and disinfecting soap.  We are also preparing supplies in case there is later a quarantine. We will continue to provide them with fruits, soap, and other simple things alternately That is the least we can do for the children and their families as we realize that finding masks and disenfetand soaps are getting harder to buy, and we want those supplies are for those who need the most, the nurses, the doctors, and hospitals.

Your generous donations will help us and help them, help the children and their families to get a little bit something to fight the virus.

Happy New Year 2020 from the Trash Pickers Community at Cirendeu, Jakarta, Indonesia..

Coming back from the end of the year holidays and entering into second half of the school year, the students are very excited because now they can enjoy a new place to work on their homework and other activities they have.

The building of the library rooms is coming along, and at the same time, the students can start using the new rooms that have already been completed.

When we told the children last year that we will have a new places for them, one of the girls asked: “Will there be a wall?”. They don’t ask for a lot, but the students got what they asked for.

With your support and donations, we continue to provide a better environment and conditions for them to learn more and explore more possibilities.

Thank you so much for your continue donations, we are very grateful of the support.

Who would have thought that Fitriyah will soon graduate from College and work at XSProject office as bookkeeper.

Fitriyah is one of our trash picker’s children under XSProject-XSEducation Scholarship program for the last 13 years . She and her family joined the community of trash pickers at one of Jakarta’s  many dump sites when she was in Grade 3. She is the oldest in the family, so her parents expect a lot of her – to help take care of her siblings and also sometimes to help her parents working on the trash they collect.

When Fitriyah was in her last year of high school, one of the colleges nearby offered students to take an entrance exam. She took it and not only passed, but she was also granted a scholarship if she decided to continue her studies. She asked the permission from her parents. Fitriyah felt she had to ask her parents, because trash picker children are expected to contribute to the family from a very young age.   Her mother who encouraged her to study, told her to take the opportunity.  Her mother told her “it’s ok, you don’t have to help us, but continue study as high as you can.”

One of the requirements to receive financial support to go to college is to give tutorials to the younger students. Fitriyah was doing so well that the kindergarten teacher promoted her to be her assistant.

The past three months Fitriyah has been in her last year of an associate degree in college.  She has done an internship at XSProject office in bookkeeping.  She said she likes to do anything with math, that is why she is taking accounting. Starting next month, she will move to working on contract, and hopefully after graduating she will be our permanent staff in the finance dept.

She has already thinking ahead … ‘would it be possible for me to continue to a bachelor’s degree while working?   Of course we will support her.

Your continue support for Fitriyah educations and other students at the community will continue encouraging them to see that there are many opportunities ahead of them.

Thank you again for your support.
