Summary

Help build a shelter for our resident disabled dogs. TOLFA is a busy hospital, with limited space for long-term residents. However there are some animals who, due to age or disability, are unable to return to the streets. We will build a separate shelter for these animals so they can enjoy improved facilities. At the same time we can build more kennels at the hospital for recovering rescue dogs, as well as increase the scope of our ABC Project (spay/neuter) to manage the street dog population.

Challenge

Some dogs we rescue have disabilities or conditions meaning they require long term care. With nowhere else to go we keep them at TOLFA as shelter animals. We no longer have enough space to comfortably accommodate our shelter animals alongside our rescue animals and hospital work. In time this issue will affect the welfare standards we are able to provide to each group. We want to expand our kennels for rescued and ABC (animal birth control) dogs while providing a safe haven for our shelter dogs.

Solution

The shelter will house up to 100 dogs within 10 large dog gardens filled with enrichment, managed by experienced TOLFA staff. The new facilities will be designed to accommodate their disabilities, with a kitchen and medical bay on site. The shelter will also house our resident large animals such as cows and donkeys. Moving animals to the new shelter will allow the space at TOLFA to be developed into more kennels for rescued animals. We will build more rehabilitation facilities and ABC kennels.

Long-Term Impact

Moving our shelter dogs from the TOLFA compound to the purpose-built shelter will significantly improve their welfare, while keeping them safe and secure away from the busy hospital. The space provided by moving the resident large animals will allow us to build rehabilitation kennels for rescued dogs and increase the number of kennels for our ABC (spay/neuter) project which helps control the dog population. This in turn will lower the number of puppies and dogs requiring rescue in the long term.
