Through a series of committed efforts, Daniel and Miss Yvonne arrived in the US in mid-May to prepare for Daniel’s life-changing, pro-bono surgery. Daniel, our delightful two year old, is still in the USA with his caregiver, Yvonne, and the pair have been graciously hosted by a family stateside during the lead up to surgery and over the past three months of recovery.
In July, the team at The Surgery Center of Carmel worked to give Daniel a Cochlear Implant. Though they volunteered their labor, only half the cost of the implant has been covered. After a month of recovering from surgery, Daniel’s implant was activated and it went incredibly well! Since then Daniel and Miss Yvonne have spent 2 to 3 days per week at a hearing center to teach Daniel to listen, to respond to audible stimuli, and to speak. The audiologist and speech therapist at the center are amazed at Daniel’s progress and keep telling us that it is going better than they had hoped!
Daniel will be returning to Kenya at the end of September and is being prepared for his return journey and for the transition back to his family at New Life Home Trust. The pathway to hearing and speaking is gradual and incremental, but we are so grateful for the hopeful progress Daniel has already made. Upon returning to Kenya, Daniel will continue therapy with an audiologist and speech therapist in Nairobi near New Life.
Our deepest thanks to everyone who has contributed, without which hearing for Daniel would not be a reality. We are deeply humbled by the outpouring of love and generosity.
