Give baby 'B' the Gift of Walking Freely

By Deborah van Dongen | CEO

Baby 'B' is a one year old in our care. We observed a number of concerns in her development: e.g. delayed sitting, crawling and standing; weakness and stiffness in her legs and hips; an unusual way of moving and bearing weight; difficulty using her hands and poor balance. These observations differ from the developmental milestones expected for her age.

Why we needed to intervene clinically:

  1. Early intervention gives the best results. The first years of life are when a child’s bones, muscles and nervous system develop fastest. Problems identified and treated now are far more likely to be corrected or managed effectively than those found later.
  2. The orthopaedic specialist can identify physical causes. The specialist assessed her bones, joints, hips, feet and posture, and advised on treatment needed, such as exercises and splints or braces in future. This will help prevent problems from worsening as she grows.
  3. The occupational therapist supports overall development. The OT assesses weekly her movement, balance, hand use and play skills. A programme tailored to her needs has helped her build the strength and coordination needed to sit, crawl, stand, walk, feed herself and explore her environment.
  4. Combined care supports her whole development. Mobility affects learning, social interaction and independence. Treating both the physical and the developmental needs together gives her the best chance of reaching her milestones.
  5. Caregivers will be supported. The specialists have shown our staff how to carry out exercises and positioning in daily routines, so the benefit continues between appointments.
  6. It is in her best interests. Ensuring that a child in care receives timely medical and therapeutic attention is part of our duty of care, and in line with the best-interests principle of the Children’s Act that we subscribe to and follow within Hearts of Hope.
