As we all are facing the crisis situation, and almost all the students are at home and not able to visit the schools. Our bicycle program has not stopped in this crisis situation. At Gram Vikas Trust, we are reaching out to the beneficiaries of bicycle program over phone or through one to one meeting by our Field Officers.

During our discussion at office level, we found that the situation is getting worse and schools are not going to open soon. We thought about beneficiaries, who are marginalized, financial crisis in family is there, culture of village is not education friendly, parents are not equipped with smart phones or TV where they can support their children for online education and so many other issues will demotivate the children after school reopens.

The children who are benefited from bicycles are those who had left schooling due to distance and lack of parents’ motivation. These children if will not contacted on time or if we did not able to understand the situation of them, will again force them to get dropped out from school.

Looking all these situation we started discussing with parents, school teachers and students. And started supporting them through different ways. We have encouraged parents to understand this crisis situation and support their children by encouraging them to continue their study at home, whatever materials they have to read. Have ask them to spend some time in a day with their children to motivate them. The school teachers to support these children by visiting them frequently, and support them. As some of the children are from very interior villages, the teachers visit was not frequent, also we encouraged the teachers to provide some books (as per the grade of the children) so the children can practice some lessons. The children were counselled by our Field Officer, as many of the children were started going to farm or other labor work or was not in contact with their teachers. Provided some books or linked such children with their fellow students who have smart phones so that they can be the part in online education.

GVT have helped some of the children by providing some set of books, which these children can refer and can continue their study in this crisis situation. All these efforts have made a small difference which we can observe in the project area. We thank our Field Team for their valuable efforts in supporting the children’s education. We also request our well-wishers if they can help us by providing some books and reading materials which will help the children. Thanking you all for your continuous support.

Future of Girls

In this pandemic situation, GVT is supporting the girls with different medium and try to engage them in learning activities, so that they do not get disengaged with education. At GVT we believe that continuous learning and support of parents in children’s learning will help the children to achieve their goal or smooth education will occur.

GVT has connected with all the girls, who were benefited with the bicycles and other education support. Most of the girls were enjoying their vacation time as per out initial communication with them. And they were not studying at home, and supporting the family in home chores or agriculture work. GVT’s field team have talked with all the girls and have asked them to join in government Home Learning program daily so that they do not get distracted from education.

In this conversation we have engaged some of their school teachers, who can help them by providing some homework, so lessons to read and simple exercise they can do it their own. We have also interacted with some of the parents, who were strongly believe that education will not happen at home (specially on TV and or mobile), we have educate them about the importance of daily some exercise about learning and how it will help the students in after school reopen. We have also support the girls if they do not have TV/Mobile at home, ask their neighbours to support.

The elder girls who were in 12^th standard, we have asked them to read and some practice for their upcoming courses. 12 girls will join bachelors (Arts, Commerce and Science), 3 girls will join GNM nursing and 2 will join computer courses. Our team is supporting them in how they can practice at home.

We at GVT are trying to support the girls by different modes so that they cannot think to drop out after this pandemic, let us come together so that we can save the girls future.

Story of Apeksha

Give a girl a bicycle- Help her to go school, in this project report, GVT wants to share update of three girls, who have been helped by bicycles and enjoying their studies. Also wants to share story of Apeksha (Name Changed) who has shown some courageous steps in daily going for school.

Three girls from Navapura (Name Changed) village are in 10^th standard, and all three girls are regularly visiting the school and doing well in studies also. In this year they have not missed a single day, their attendance in school is 100%. While interacting with them, our colleague come to know that all the three girls are really happy as they are the only girls from their village who are supported by their families, due to good in studies. And they could continue their studies because of the support from GVT else they might not be able to continue their studies after 8^th standard. The Navapura village is very interior and most of the students are not able to continue their studies due to the village culture and poor background of the families.

Apeksha from very rigid family background, has fought for her studies. She is studying in class 11. After completing her 8^th from her village, she was gifted by a bicycle by GVT. But almost half of the year she could not able to go to school. Her father was happy with the bicycle but he was not ready for the up and down for her daughter. After some efforts by our colleague her father was ready to send her school. But in between some household work and other social pressure her family was not supporting for her education. But she fought for it, and she is going to school on regular basis. She is also doing well in her studies and she is aiming that she will become Teacher and will help the students of her area.

Many of the girls, after getting bicycles can able to continue the studies. And many more are not able to going to school because of distance or some other issues in the society. At GVT we are trying to be a bridge for the girls to support them for their studies through bicycle.
