This project will provide a two-year after-school reading program for struggling pupils in Classes 3-6 in rural Southwest Cameroon. Through structured literacy support, guided practice, and mentorship, we will help children build strong reading skills, regain confidence, and succeed in school, reducing dropout rates and protecting them from risks like early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and youth delinquency.
Low reading proficiency among Primary 3-6 pupils in rural communities in the southwest regions of Cameroon drives high dropout rates in secondary school. Many transition without foundational reading proficiency skills and struggle to compete with urban peers, leading to repeated exam failure and eventual withdrawal within 2-3 years. As a result, boys are vulnerable to drugs and crime, while girls face worse risks of early marriage and teenage pregnancy before age 18.
This program addresses low literacy levels by delivering a structured, two-year after-school reading intervention for pupils in Classes 3-6 in rural communities of the Southwest Region. Targeting children aged 5-17 with low reading proficiency, the program provides remedial literacy support, guided reading practice, and continuous assessment to strengthen foundational skills, improve academic performance, and reduce secondary school dropout rates
By strengthening foundational reading skills, this program will equip children with the confidence and academic ability needed to succeed in secondary school and beyond. Improved literacy will reduce dropout rates, limit vulnerability to early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and youth delinquency, and create pathways for continued education and employment. Over time, this will contribute to a more educated, self-reliant, and resilient community.
