The 21st century has been defined by rapid innovation in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Despite the popularity of STEM, only a small number of women join these fields. Girls2Pioneers is a programme run by the Singapore Committee for UN Women to encourage and inspire young girls into STEM. We target girls age 10 to 15, especially those who are at risk or from low income families. Girls2Pioneers holds day camps and field trips, exposing them to STEM fields that range from engineering to aerodynamics to neurology.
This year, we have a whole new curriculum developed by Discovery Without Borders and Girls4Tech. The new activities are interactive and aim to promote positive experiences and healthy attitudes towards STEM learning as students tackle real world issues through exploration, inquiry and problem solving workshops.
In 2016, we have reached out to 2,538 girls so far with many more day camps to come ove the next month!
In addition to students, Girls2Pioneers also works with parents, teachers and employers to challenge existing stereotypes about women’s roles in STEM. With Girls2Pioneers, we hope to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals in Singapore, in a society when the phrase “you code like a girl” will be a compliment of the highest order.
