In response to the increasingly complex context surrounding migration and forced displacement in Mexico, Fondo Semillas has recently completed its latest selection process, with 16 organizations focused on working with migrant and displaced populations. These grassroots efforts come at a crucial time as the government of Claudia Sheinbaum faces scrutiny for its migration policies with rising social tensions.
Some organizations that will be part of this process are the Colectivo Yaxchena, in Chiapas. They focus on empowering indigenous and rural women, fostering healing and promoting a culture of care. Their work aims to bridge the gap between rural and indigenous communities, promoting networks that support mental wellbeing and community cohesion. In Baja California, CASA COLECTIVA will work to improve multidisciplinary services for trans women and young girls in transit, offering legal assistance, health services, and creative empowerment through art therapy.
In addition, Partería y Medicinas Ancestrales A.C., with outreach in several states, will focus on expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services for migrant and vulnerable populations along Mexico's migratory routes. Colectiva Feminista MAPAS in Michoacán is developing support and self-defense communities for young women from agrarian families and young migrant women. Its goal is to strengthen these communities to address gender-based violence by promoting self-empowerment and mutual care among survivors.
In Chiapas, Iniciativas Para el Desarrollo Humano A.C. will provide support to children, adolescents, and women in transit by offering them reliable information on access to essential services and advocating for their integration into local communities. Espacio Migrante A.C. is focusing on building inclusive and safe spaces by promoting feminist, intersectional, and anti-racist approaches in its advocacy work.
These grassroots organizations work to address the root causes of marginalization and foster adaptation to change in both migrant and host communities. Their commitment to inclusion and advocacy is crucial at a time of growing political tensions and social disparities, where change, violence, and discourses of social exclusion are becoming more and more prevalent.
