Act4Africa envisions changing lives of millions of young mothers for good through the adolescent mothers' programme. It is committed to seeing that adolescent mothers shift from leading a life of poverty and vulnerability, to individuals that are empowered to stand up for themselves, and are in position to provide for themselves and their little ones.
This report highlights the transformative impact of the programme on the lives of participants, focusing on the story of Namboozo, a 23-year-old mother of three living with disabilities.
Namboozo, a young woman from a small village in Lwabala, Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda, has faced significant challenges due to her disability. Her left arm and right leg are of unequal length, making movement and handling objects difficult. Living in poverty, she had little hope for a better future, compounded by stigma and discrimination from her peers and the community.
Programme Selection and Training
Despite these challenges, Namboozo was selected to participate in the Adolescent Mothers Programme. This selection marked a pivotal moment in her life. She was trained in making bar soap, a skill she could develop alongside her husband, who supports her due to her condition. The training included the use of a soap moulder, an experience that Namboozo described as a dream come true.
Empowerment and Transformation
Namboozo's journey through the programme has been one of profound transformation. In her own words, she expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity given to her:
"Thank you Act4Africa for choosing an outcast like me for this programme. I never knew that people like me matter in this world, but you have changed the narrative. The fact that I am going to produce my own soap is unimaginable but true. Thank you for the opportunity to turn my life around."
Her husband also shared his appreciation, noting the positive impact on their lives despite the ridicule Namboozo faced from their community. He expressed gratitude that Act4Africa recognised his wife's potential and provided her with this valuable opportunity.
Impact on the Community
Namboozo's story is just one of many success stories emerging from the Adolescent Mothers Programme. The initiative aims to reach, touch, and transform the lives of women and young girls in similar or even more challenging situations across Eastern Uganda. By empowering participants with skills and confidence, the programme seeks to break the cycle of poverty and stigma associated with disability.
Future Aspirations
With continuous support, the Adolescent Mothers Programme aspires to extend its reach and impact. By fostering a supportive environment and providing practical skills, the programme hopes to enable more women like Namboozo to achieve self-sufficiency and improve their quality of life.
